Thoughts - August 11th

Mizuho is dead.

I don't understand.
Why? Why was I spared and not she?
Daddy made a point to tell me how he saved me. She was fighting by his side! Did she get separated? Was his attention diverted? What occurred to allow this to happen?

I feel so guilty.

"Blood Like Money"

Corbin quietly watched her circle the room, waiting, hoping. When she stopped and looked longingly out the large bay window, he knew he had her. He grinned from ear to ear when she said he was hired, and his eyes took on an all too familiar look. The look of hunger.

"My resources are yours to command m'lady," he said with a bow and a flourish. "But first, I must inquire into the little issue of payment." The word flowed from his lips as the addiction crept to the front of his mind. It was not like the Kindred's beast, but was no less potent, driving perfectly sane men to acts of lunacy. This was no different, it consumed him.

The look of hunger. Oh yes, she recognized that look. She has seen it in so many others throughout the years. This is the look that gave her Nathaniel, the look that earned her a Sire, the look that brought her into the world of the Damned in the first place. And she knows how this look works, too.

The smile doesn't leave her face in the least when he speaks of payment. There is only one thing he wants, she knows, and she came fully prepared to provide it.

"How are you used to coming about your payment, Mr. Corbin?"

Corbin's mind retreated further as he absently licked his lips. "However it comes doesn't matter as long as it does. I've long since lost my dignity when it comes to this."

So it's like this...

The sense of power surges through her momentarily, turning her smile to a smirk for just a second. Were she as humane as she had been upon embrace she would have instantly hated herself for it, for being aware of the power that vitae holds over others, but she has since accepted that some things are simply so.

"Then come receive your payment," she offers, reaching into her jacket and pulling out a delicate pocket knife.

Corbin placed one foot in front of the other, all he could hear was his own blood thrumming in his ear. His vision tunneled on the pen knife, the flashlight feel from his hands, and in moments his hunger would be satiated. Months of pain erased in one single moment of weakness, it was worth it to him. He was close now so very close.

Corbin was so close now, she could hear his breathing. He locked eyes with her, "Do it now and seal this contract forever."

"Forever is a long time," she answers him as she lays the knife to her wrist. She takes a deep breath against the pain as the blade cuts her skin and she forces her blood to the surface. Fully aware of the edge that Corbin teeters on, she holds out the wrist almost immediately and braces herself.

He never heard her words. As soon as the blade touched her skin he fell upon the wound like a raving animal, drinking deeply. He drank deeper than someone of his size would be able, giving into the euphoria that the Vitae delivered.

In moments he was calm again, the Vitae working its power, rejuvenating his mind and body. With his mind once again his own, Corbin imprinted his own will on the vitae entering his system. It bonded with him, revealing her emotions to him. Her curiosity, her arrogance with the power, even the resilience of her mind as she braced against his onslaught. His previous regent was like touching nature itself, this was different.

Iris smiles as the bond clicked into place, benevolence on her lips as well as pride. It is when she feels an oddness, a difference, that she pulls her wrist away. She's given blood to Allison and Fairchild enough times now to feel that something is strange now.

She grasps the wrist to her chest, forcing the small cut to heal and rubbing the place where he fed so vigorously. Her eyes say that she is aware that something was strange, but she says nothing yet on the subject.

"Good to have you on board, Corbin," she says instead, her voice as even as she can make it.

Corbin stepped away from Iris, retrieving a white handkerchief from his breast pocket. "Thank you madam, and thank you for your understanding nature concerning my behavior. The addiction is one thing that I have not been able to control. I can only liken it to your beast," he said dabbing at the corners of his mouth.

He paused as he felt her confusion, "Is something the matter?"

She places the pen knife back in her pocket and pulls out a black handkerchief of her own, dabbing her wrist gently to clean away any stray blood. Her face is slightly pensive as she cleans her wrist and she does not look back at him until she is sure that she is clean.

"You took me off guard, Mr. Corbin. I was unprepared for you to bond so deeply as to become sympathetic with me. I... it has been a few years since I have felt such a thing."

Corbin straightened his tie and suit, checking thoroughly for blood spots.

"Most understandable, though I must say I am impressed for one of your age to know of such things. I have met ancients that are unaware of certain thralls ability to bond on such a level. It is just one more thing that I offer in your service."

Satisfied with the state of his person Corbin looked up at her meeting her gaze, striking an odd dichotomy between submission and dominance.

"Now that business is concluded, how may I serve you best? Are your mortal affairs in order?" It was eerie how quickly he fell into his role, here was one that was bred to be a servant.

Iris raises an eyebrow and smiles, curiosity threaded in her voice. "How much did they tell you about me, Mr. Corbin?"

"While I must admit Ms. Iris, not enough to thoroughly know you. I have the Villain records on you dating back to 2005. I know that you achieved your embrace sometime in 2006, when Conrad Van der Haus took a liking to your master and chose to take you as his childe. I am even aware of your short spat with the Family over a small child said to be the seed of Ms. Eva, and Senki's servant, whose name eludes me. Following this your subsequent conversion to the Lance, and newly formed alliance with the Family after their return from their slumber. Though they never did fully trust you. It wasn't until after I had contacted Mr. Sabre that I knew of your rise to power after the disappearance of the Villains. I know that you are Ventrue, have a close affiliation with one Mr. Fairchild, and apparently another by the name of Sereph. Though how deep this affiliation goes, remains unclear to me."

He smiled as he slid his hands behind his back, "And that madam, true or otherwise, is the extent of my knowledge."

"Ah. Young in my Requiem, then. That makes sense. I am not so young, however. I have seen nearly a century and a half in my day, though most of it as a servant. And truly I do not blame the family for not trusting me upon my return as I did not get the chance to speak with them but for a few short conversations."

She sighs and runs her fingers along the top of the desk she still stands beside, brushing a layer of dust off of her fingertips. "My mortal affairs... I believe them to be in order, but I would not mind a second eye going over things to ensure that I have missed nothing in the chaos."

"I see some things are always lost in the fog of eternity, no matter how short the rest. Those files were written after Lord Sebastian awoke. It is no matter, I will edit or destroy them as you see fit."

He retrieves the flashlight that was dropped during his "payment" though refrained from flicking the light back on. "It would be my pleasure to verify your holdings and attend to any errors. Until then, shall we adjourn to some place a bit more comfortable? Perhaps a place with less dust, or ghosts."

She gives the room one last look over and sighs, a look of almost longing on her face despite the smile she wears. "That would be a good idea, I think. One could get too many grand ideas standing around in a place like this for too long, and I'm not ready to bring those thoughts to fruition just yet."

"Patience is a virtue." Corbin flicked the light back and and lead the way back out into the cool night air. The same black SUV was waiting, the engine still running. He closed the large oak doors behind them, locking them and placing the key back in the heavy key vault.

"All in due time," he said under his breath as he patted the door. Turning he stepped up to the side door of the car and offered his hand to her again.

She chuckles as he quotes one of her favorite lines and follows him out, resisting the urge to look back at the Manor before the reach the SUV. When they get there, though, she takes his hand and looks back at the looming building one more time. Soon... not tomorrow, certainly, not next month.. maybe not even this year... but soon.

She smiles at Corbin and allows him to aid her into the vehicle, giving him her full attention once inside. She has her goal in mind, no need to look back at it like a desperate lover or mooning schoolgirl.

"Where to, Mr. Corbin? I find myself in a rather good mood all of a sudden."

"That depends Ms. Iris. Do you want to retrieve your vehicle from the Village parking lot or should I send one of my men to retrieve it for you?"

"I can send Allison to retrieve it, not to worry. Did you have someplace in mind?"

"Your new office," Corbin smiled as he produced a set of keys and a key card.

Her eyes light up and she pulls out her phone, quickly texting instructions to her ghoul. When she closes her phone he can feel her pleasure and excitement.

"All set. Let's go."

Corbin nods to the driver and they pull out into the night. It didn't take long before the car pulled up in front of the Roberts Hotel. Corbin climbed out and offered his hand again. Together he leads them to the furthest elevator in the elevator bank. When they were in the elevator he turned to Iris.

"Just swipe the key card here," he directed with point of his finger to a unnoticed key card slot in the bottom of the button panel.

She remembers Sabre's mention of the elevators, and vaguely remembers them herself, though it had been some time. She slides the key card he had given her and waits, only barely containing her anxious excitement.

The elevator drops a few floors before opening to a marble floored hallway with several doors on each side and ending in a pair of double wooden doors.

"These doors lead to several offices for the various officers of the city, the Sheriff, the Keeper, the Seneschal, and of course yours," he stops in front of the double doors. The doors open to reveal plush carpet, a large wooden desk, and deep rich leather chairs.

"We'll have to set up the computer to suit your needs, but the security panel is over here. I'll walk you through the proper operation and security procedures. The building is wired inside and out, all of which run through this. You'll find the recordings of the last gather here as well. I took the liberty of editing out the boring parts, and of course it'll take some time to get used to watching fuzzy blobs on the screen but once you know who is who it gets easier." Corbin continues to rattle on and on about the security, the residences set up for Kindred in the hotel, and the panic room set up for the prince in the rear of the office that leads to a street level exit several blocks away.

Iris begins to calm as the elevator lowers. When the doors open to reveal the hallway, she smiles and steps out, thrilled to hear the noise her heels make on the marble floor. A chill runs down her spine and she takes a breath before following Corbin to the double doors.

As he begins to describe the details of her office, she slowly walks around and examines the room. She takes mental notes about additions she wishes to see and decoration changes to mention to Allison. When he finishes speaking she is standing behind her desk, clearly listening to him and noting the different details.

"The office is spectacular, Mr. Corbin. Is it the same room used by Princes past?"

"Indeed, it was built and integrated into the Roberts during Riven's rein. He never used it. At least not to its full effect. And of course Lord Sebastian wasn't around long enough to claim it. Since then I've used it to keep tabs on the local kindred. Another reason I was able to find you so easily."

She is slightly disappointed to learn that the Villains where not the ones to orchestrate the use of these offices and security system, though to realize that Riven was the one that built it brought him up a notch in her mind. A small notch, that is.

"It worries me that I seem to be so easy to find. Not a slight to your skills, of course, but apparently even the Hunters had little issue getting the information they needed."

"Believe me madam that will be a thing of the past. With the my help we will secure your security procedures and insure that you are safer than you were. Part of the reason for the security here in the hotel."

He shifted slightly were he was standing, "Are these hunters still and issue?"

"Their leader locally has supposedly been taken down, but according to Mr. Dash they are well funded and not entirely local. So until I have proof otherwise, then yes, I have to assume that they are still a very serious issue."

"I'll be sure to look into then. Perhaps after I make sure your security is air tight."

"What do I need to do?" This talk of hunters has sobered her, she is all business now and ready to work. "And it's not just myself that we need to worry about. If they take down those with information that you've protected and that info gets out, then all your work is for naught."

She smirks a little, "And I'm a little tired of having my life in danger."

"I understand ma'am. We should start with your haven and your finances. Does anyone know where you sleep during the day? And if so can these individuals be trusted to keep that secret?"

It doesn't take long before they leave the city limits, the driver following only the verbal directions from Corbin, several made to deliberately confuse pursuers. A few minutes later they pull into a long brick drive, flanked by tall picturesque trees. Then it looms in front of them, the Manor is huge spanning out onto the grounds. It sits dark and ominous against the dark sky.

The SUV pulls to a stop in front of the massive oak doors. Corbin climbs out, holding the door for Iris.

"M'lady, may I present to you Villain Manor."

Iris takes his hand and steps out, looking around with wide eyes. She has been quiet on the ride there, patient that he would share his secret when they arrived, and now she finds that she is not disappointed.

When she is on the ground, she steps away from him and a wide smile breaks across her face.

"I knew it," she whispers, shaking her head at the dark Manor looming before them.

He fumbled around in his pocket and produced a ring of keys, "The Villains moved from the Manor last year after their falling out with Moreno. Of course to the public, there was no falling out. Moreno tried to dominate the family in process making enemies of them all. Once he was removed from the grounds they built a new manor down in Yorktown. I used my influence to build the new manor in the likeness of the old. It was done in a matter of months. Aside from loosing my employers, I was glad that it burned down. It never matched the majesty of the old one."

He approached the old wooden doors and unlocked a key lock box handing from the front door handle. Deftly he unlocked the door and swung it open for her.

"Would you like the tour?"

Iris looks nothing but pleased, though her excitement is much more contained now than it was when she first stepped out of the SUV.

"I would very much like the tour, thank you."

She is still smiling widely as she steps up to the front door. As she steps inside, she looks back over her shoulder at him, a cocky gleam in her eye.

"I'm impressed, Mr. Corbin," she says to him, waiting for him to follow her inside and start the tour.

"I had hoped that this would provide you the proof you needed." He smiled as his driver handed off a flashlight to him. Stepping into the darkness of the house he flicked on the torch and proceeded down the hall.

Huge marble stairs branched to either side of the foyer, statues line the walls in little alcoves. The light illuminates empty rooms, some furniture remains here and there draped with white cloth to prevent dust from accumulating.

Corbin points out small things describing how the used certain rooms before stepping off to the side. "Here is where the Family really lived, all the trappings that you've seen were merely quarters for their servants," he said as he moved a non-descript panel to reveal a key pad. "I would show you the undermanse but I was never given the code, and I very much doubt there is power running to it anymore. I can however show you Lucien's study."

Corbin lead the way up one of the marble stairs and toward the back of the house, only to open another set of large oak doors. The light revealing bits and pieces of beautiful carvings on the doors themselves, in reality they paled in comparison to what lay beyond. The study lays virtually untouched. Rich rugs line the floors leading to massive empty bookcases that lined the walls. Beautiful marble sculptures sit in the corners overlooking the whole room, like angels guarding a treasure. The center of the room is dominated by a large desk of exotic wood covered with months of dust. And beyond the desk a large bay window overlooking the grounds. Moonlight reaching in to touch all that it can, giving the room and strange picturesque yet phantasmal look.

"The Villain's truly had an unrivaled sense of style did they not?"

Covering her tracks...

-- In her journal, several pages are ripped from the middle. Anything mentioning Conrad as her Sire, with the exception of one entry. The entry marked "August 23rd" merely has the word "Conrad" cut from the page, so that there is a little rectangular hole. There are a couple of entries after that which are removed as well, so that the newest entries do not begin again until November 12th. --
